I know he got his regular wings back in later comics but how come I see him with metal wings in newer books? Does he take the metal off and on or what?

When he has his feathered wings he’s called “Angel.” But, as part of an X-Force storyline, a cult of mutant-hating Christians abducted him and revived his Apocalypse-influenced DNA that allowed him to become Archangel and return the metal wings. Since then, he’s been pulling double duty as Angel in the X-men, and as Archangel on X-Force, the X-Men’s black-ops strike team. So to answer your question, he doesn’t take the metal off, he just shifts back and forth between the two personas, and the physical transformation occurs at the same time.
